Weight Gain During Pregnancy

If the average weight of a newborn baby is ~8lbs, why does our number on the scale go up so much more than that?

PLEASE NOTE: These are just guidelines!

If you are gaining more weight but are feeling great, DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT.

You should not be obsessing over your weight during pregnancy- your priority is to nourish your body so that you are giving your little baby & yourself what you need. Period.

Baby  8 pounds

Placenta 2-3 pounds

Amniotic fluid 2-3 pounds

Breast Tissue  2-3 pounds

Increased blood supply 4 pounds

Extra fat stores  5-9 pounds

Uterus increase 2-5 pounds

Total: 25-35 pounds

I will repeat it again:

You should not be obsessing over your weight during pregnancy- your priority is to nourish your body so that you are giving your little baby & yourself what you need.

Makes sense, right?

“As a general rule, you should gain 5 pounds during your first three months of pregnancy and one pound per week during the remainder.”
