How to not gain 10 pounds over Easter weekend
I can't think of one Holiday that doesn't equate to the grocery store having piles and piles of displays of crappy food (crappy food= processed food = no bueno).
Easter is one of the worst- with chocolate being EVERYWHERE (not to mention when said chocolate is in the shape of bunnies, my personal favourite animal in the world....)
And don't get me wrong, if you know me, you know that I am the biggest chocolate lover in the world, but the "healthy" chocolate I consume has minimal ingredients and is pure, dark and clean.
In all honesty, I don't think there is anything wrong with indulging in a treat or two (we only live once, after all).
But I do think it's important to have a strategy on hand to ensure that you do not overdo it.
For me, I find I have complete control of myself when I'm in my own home/space.
I run into trouble when I go back home to visit my parents (my Mum is Italian and an amazing cook so the fridge is always stocked and good food is always readily available!)
So I have come up with this strategy for not feeling like crap, or gaining 10 pounds, during these out-of-my-own-home times.
This is my plan:
- I make the decision ahead of time and commit to it. This is the most important step. Commit to yourself. It is so easy to mindlessly grab a treat here or a baked good there and scarf it down. Instead I am choosing to be mindful of everything I put in my mouth, and only I hold the power of what I will fuel my body with.
- I am prepared. I have made in advance some of my favourite treats to indulge in. Check out this amazing recipe for a healthy 'Hello Dolly Bar' (a family favourite) and this clean version of a Cadbury Egg which I've made to have on hand and share with the fam-jam.
- I will pay attention to when I am actually hungry vs. eating for the sake of eating. This is an important skill to learn. It's almost like working on building a certain muscle at the gym. You need to practice it, and work on it. Give it a try, you will gain a lot of insight on how much food your body actually needs.
- Don't freak out if you are caught in an awkward situation. Earlier this week on my Facebook Page I posted a meme about how I used to love Cadbury Eggs but now wouldn't go near them at all. And then my amazing mother commented on that post telling me that she bought me one as a special "Easter treat" because she knew I loved them! This broke my heart, and I would never want to hurt my Mama, so I may have to suck it up and have 1 Easter chocolate. Will it kill me? No. Will it make me feel like crap? Probably not if I just have 1. So be realistic, and do what you have to do.
So there you have my plan for the weekend. As you can see, most of the things are a mental choice.
I'm going in with a strong mind, and hopefully leaving with no extra pounds (but a lot of happy memories- awwwww)!
